President asserts democracy’s crucial role in promoting societal harmony

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has articulated that modern democracy is instrumental in preserving the status of an independent nation.

In his statement on the occasion of the International Day of Democracy, President Solih emphasised that it fosters a society where citizens can pursue economic prosperity and live in contentment. He extended his profound appreciation to those individuals who have played pivotal roles in the establishment of democracy within the nation. He further acknowledged the sacrifices made by many in their relentless pursuit of democratic ideals.

In his discourse, President Solih underscored the significant strides the Maldives has made on its path toward democracy. He noted that the assurance of equal opportunities and rights for all citizens in every state-provided service is a cornerstone of societal contentment. He further asserted that the nation and its people have reaped substantial benefits from the principles enshrined in the Maldives Constitution, ever since they were formulated and implemented.

Moreover, President Solih emphasised that the bedrock of modern democracy lies in the freedom of the press and freedom of expression. In his address, he acknowledged that the evolution of a free and transparent press environment has significantly bolstered the nation's democratic fabric. He further noted that while exercising these freedoms, it is crucial to bear in mind the inherent responsibilities and obligations that accompany them.
