The Democrats elects Azim as PG leader

The Democrats has elected Parliamentarian Ali Azim as the Leader of the Parliamentary Group (PG).

The Democrats elected members to various parliamentary positions on September 14. As such, parliamentarians Ahmed Zahir and Ibrahim Rasheed have been elected as deputy PG leaders while Mohamed Rasheed have been elected as Chief Whip. Mohamed Waheed has been elected as the Secretary General of the PG. They were elected to the positions with votes from all 11 parliamentary representatives of The Democrats.

The Democrats was formed by supporters of Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed after leaving main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP). Ilyas Labeeb, the presidential candidate of The Democrats, was the third most popular candidate in the first round of the presidential election. The results show that opposition People's National Congress (PNC) candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu received 46% while MDP candidate President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih received 39% and Ilyas received 7% of the votes.
