The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has stated that there are no military activities taking place that could compromise the nation's independence and sovereignty.
Speaking to PSM News, Chief of Defence Force Major General Abdulla Shamaal said that there are no military activities taking place that could compromise the nation's independence and sovereignty, adding that MNDF is determined to prevent any such occurrences. He said that the government's foreign and defense policies involve extensive cooperation with foreign military counterparts, encompassing training programmes and various joint operations. He clarified that the aim of these partnerships with foreign nations is to bolster the operational capabilities of the MNDF.
Additionally, Major General Shamaal highlighted the longstanding assistance provided by India to the MNDF, particularly in terms of training and various military operations. He mentioned that India had donated significant assets, such as an Indian Coast Guard helicopter in 2011, an Indian Navy helicopter in 2016, and a Dornier aircraft in 2019, along with other maritime equipment and patrol vessels. He said these vessels primarily serve as medical transportation, sea rescues, and search and rescue missions, all under the complete command and control of the MNDF.
Furthermore, Major General Shamaal categorically denied allegations regarding areas within the Maldives where the national armed forces do not maintain control, assuring that MNDF remains prepared to safeguard the country's independence and sovereignty. In addition, he affirmed that detailed information about the Coast Guard Ekatha Harbour development project has been shared with media outlets and the 241 Committee at the Parliament of the Maldives, adding that all facilities and equipment at the harbour are owned by the Maldives with the MNDF actively involved in its security.
