The Commonwealth Observer Group has praised the Maldivian citizens for their peaceful and organised exercise of their voting rights during the presidential elections on September 9.
Speaking at a press conference, former President of Seychelles and Chair of the Commonwealth Observer Group Danny Faure affirmed that the presidential election was conducted in full compliance with the established regulations. He highlighted that the group engaged with a diverse array of stakeholders and were dispatched to various atolls throughout the election process. He also expressed that the group witnessed campaign activities conducted in a peaceful and lively atmosphere.
Additionally, Faure expressed his gratitude towards the Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) and the polling staff for their transparent and efficient execution of the electoral process. He commended the polling officials for their unwavering dedication, professionalism, and diligence in carrying out their responsibilities. He acknowledged that the election process had become more accessible for pregnant women, the elderly, and those requiring assistance, marking a significant milestone as it was the first time blind individuals were able to cast their votes independently.
Furthermore, Faure pointed out that the proximity of polling stations to delegates and observers raised concerns about the secrecy of the vote. He also noted a significant number of invalid votes, prompting him to call upon the public to increase awareness regarding these issues.
