Presidential election goes to second round

The second round of the presidential election is scheduled to be held on September 30 after none of the candidates received 50% of the votes in the first round.

The preliminary results show that Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the candidate of opposition People's National Congress (PNC), is in the lead with 46.15% or 101,453 of the votes. President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih received 39.09% or 85,920 votes.

The preliminary results also show that The Democrats candidate Ilyas Labeeb is in third place with independent candidate Umar Naseer in fourth, and Jumhooree Party (JP) candidate Qasim Ibrahim in fifth. Meanwhile, independent candidate Faris Maumoon is in sixth place, Maldives National Party (MNP) candidate Mohamed Nazim is in seventh, and independent presidential candidate Hassan Zameel is in eighth.
