In a momentous event set to shape the future of the Maldives, voting for the highly-anticipated Presidential Election of 2023 is set to commence nationwide at 0800hrs on September 9.
This election stands as a historic milestone in the nation's democratic journey. One of its defining characteristics is the record-breaking number of candidates vying for the presidential office, a first in Maldivian history. With the introduction of the multi-party system in 2008, this is the first time these many candidates are competing for presidency. As such, eight candidates are contending in the fourth presidential election, representing five political parties and three independent candidates.

All campaign activities for both political parties and independent candidates concluded at 1800hrs on September 8.
The Elections Commission of Maldives (ECM) has revealed that polling stations are fully equipped and adequately staffed to facilitate the voting process. ECM has also extended invitations to international observers to oversee the election, reaffirming its commitment to transparency and fairness.
In an exclusive interview with PSM News, President of ECM, Fuwad Thaufeeq, expressed confidence that this election would be the fairest and most transparent yet.
ECM has disclosed that polling will commence at 0800hrs at all polling stations, with the ballot boxes scheduled to close at 1600hrs. The counting of votes will commence 30 minutes after the closure of each box.
A total of 282,395 eligible voters are registered, and 574 polling stations have been established both within the country and abroad. As the votes are counted after 1600hrs, the results will be announced, with a preliminary result expected on September 9.
Citizens are strongly encouraged to confirm their polling station locations and verify their voter registration details to ensure a hassle-free voting experience.
A possible second round is scheduled for September 30.
