EU EOM to ensure election is in accordance with democratic principles

The European Union (EU) Election Observation Mission has emphasised the vital role played by international observers in overseeing the electoral process, promoting fairness and transparency.

In an interview with PSM News, Anne Marlbaro, Deputy Chief Observer of the EU Election Observation Team, discussed their close scrutiny of various aspects of the election process, such as the compilation of voter lists, re-registration procedures, and campaign activities. The team reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the 2023 presidential election adheres to democratic principles.

Anne underscored the EU delegation's focus on evaluating the practices of media outlets concerning the allocation of time to political parties and candidates, as well as the content generated in relation to the elections. She announced the EU's intention to prepare a report assessing whether print media, social media, and broadcasting channels provided equitable coverage to all political stakeholders. This preliminary report is expected to be released two days after the polls, providing insights into media actions and offering recommendations for improvements, she added.

Anne described the involvement of international observers as a means to encourage to conduct a fair and transparent election. She emphasised this process enhances public confidence in the integrity of the election. Importantly, she noted that EU team members have no vested interests in the outcome of the Maldivian presidential election, which ensures their fairness and neutrality.

The Election Observation Mission (EOM) is currently on a mission to observe the upcoming presidential election, aiming to ensure that the electoral process aligns with international, regional, and Maldivian democratic principles and laws. EOM members will be actively present in various regions of the Maldives on polling day.

A total of 165 international monitors and observers will be deployed during Saturday's presidential election, comprising 143 observers and 22 monitors.
