Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has revealed that it has made all preparations for the presidential election on September 9.
Speaking to PSM News, President of ECM Fuad Thaufeeq said that the electoral body has completed the tasks related to recruiting and training election officials. As such, he said that officials have been transferred to the polling stations abroad as well.
Additionally, Fuad said that ECM has received very few complaints regarding the election and that the complaints have been investigated and action has been taken. He also said that police teams are prepared to be stationed at polling stations while the Ministry of Tourism is giving its full support to establish polling stations at the resorts.
Furthermore, Fuad said that all state agencies are working hard to hold the election and that observers, monitors, and foreign representatives are arriving in the Maldives. He added that this year would see the most transparent presidential election ever held in the country. A total of 1,700 observers and monitors will be participating in this year's election.
A total of 574 polling stations will be set up in the Maldives and five other countries for this year's presidential election. The first round of voting is scheduled to be held on September 9 and a possible second round will be held on September 30. The eligible voting population for the presidential election is 282,395, including over 27,000 new voters.
