Testing begins for waste-to-energy plant in Addu

Waste Management Corporation Limited (WAMCO) has begun testing the waste-to-energy plant in Addu City as part of its efforts to bring the facility into operation. The state-owned company has also begun recruiting employees and procuring the equipment and resources necessary for the facility.

The government contracted South Korean joint venture company Lotus Kunwar to establish the waste-to-energy plant in Addu. The project was funded with USD16 million from the Maldives Green Fund. The incinerators needed to burn waste for energy generation were designed and made abroad.

The waste-to-energy plant is connected to the central power grid of Addu and is expected to burn 50 tonnes of waste per day and generate 1.5MW of electricity per hour for the city. The facility will process waste from Addu, Fuvahmulah City, as well as islands and resorts in Gaafu Alifu Atoll and Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll. The waste will be stored inside a bunker and will be processed inside a closed system, preventing pollution.
