Muizzu vows to expel companies that undermine sovereignty

Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the presidential candidate of the People's National Congress (PNC), has vowed to expel foreign companies that undermine sovereignty.

At a campaign event in Mahibadhoo, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, Muizzu said that the current situation requires leaders to prioritise national independence rather than development. He described agreements made between the government and foreign companies as opaque and claimed that the government does not wish to divulge details of the agreements concerning the Thilamale' Bridge project and the ongoing projects in Uthuru Thila Falhu, Hanimaadhoo, and Addu City.

As such, Muizzu pledged to uncover the details of the agreements and expel any foreign company that is undermining sovereignty, similar to the ousting of India-based GMR Group. He also vowed to remove any foreign military personnel from the country. He, however, added that his administration would not interfere in any project that benefits the country.

Additionally, Muizzu provided details of his development plan for Mahibadhoo and Alifu Dhaalu Atoll. He pledged to transfer the jurisdiction of nearby Maafaru Lagoon to Mahibadhoo and commence a reclamation project on the island. He also vowed to commence housing and tourism projects and other economically beneficial initiatives in the atoll.

At a previous campaign event in Gan, Laamu Atoll, Muizzu pledged to allow residents of smaller communities in Laamu Atoll to move to more populated areas. He said that he would provide them with housing as part of his party's pledge to permanently solve the housing crisis in the country in the next five years.

Additionally, Muizzu said that he would expand the agricultural sector in Laamu Atoll and commence infrastructure development projects, which will include road development projects in Fonadhoo and Gan. He also pledged to develop a resort in Baresdhoo to expand the local tourism industry.
