Ilyas Labeeb, the presidential candidate of The Democrats, has pledged to introduce a progressive tax-collecting system in the Maldives.
Speaking at the presidential debate, Ilyas pledged to eliminate the Goods and Service Tax (GST) for small businesses and increase taxes on large corporations, sparing ordinary citizens from heavy tax burdens. He committed to reducing GST from 8% back to 6% and also proposed reforms to pay the debt of the country.
Regarding foreign policy, Ilyas pledged to strengthen relations with all nations. He also emphasised his commitment to youth development, pledging to establish research centres in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and allocate 30% of the cabinet to young individuals.
