President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has transferred the jurisdiction of Gaaerifalhu to Hinnavaru, Lhaviyani Atoll, and Mathiveri Finolhu to Mathiveri, Alifu Alifu Atoll.
Mathiveri Finolhu is a small uninhabited island near Mathiveri which was handed over to a private party to develop a resort in 2014. However, President Solih decided to transfer it to the jurisdiction of Hinnavaru in accordance with the wishes of the residents, who want to use it as a picnic island. In addition, Gaaerifalhu has a land area of 3.3 hectares and is being used by a private fisheries company since 2016.
The Constitution stipulates that the administrative areas of the Maldives shall be decentralised. The President is also responsible for determining the jurisdiction of local councils in all administrative areas under the Decentralisation Act.
