National Museum reopens with modern facilities

The Maldives National Museum has reopened with modern facilities. The museum is open from 1015hrs to 1530hrs on official working days.

National Centre for Cultural Heritage contracted Dino Construction Company Private Limited for the redevelopment and modernisation of the National Museum in May. The project was funded with a USD141,000 grant from the Bank of Maldives (BML).

The project included various tasks such as preparing the showcases for the National Museum, establishing a multimedia room, placing floor runners in the music display area, and painting the walls. As a result, the museum now boasts 19 showcases akin to those seen in international museums. In addition, the newly created multimedia room is equipped to offer history-related video presentations to visitors and host informative sessions for students.

Additionally, the temperature control system was modernised and a security camera network was installed as part of the project. The state spent USD305,000 on the project and USD6,500 was taken from the Heritage Trust Fund for other works at the museum. The heritage centre stated that the museum was reopened with new artifacts that have never been exhibited before, and revealed that plans have been made to further modernise the museum.

The National Museum serves as a comprehensive repository of information encompassing the history, heritage, and culture of the Maldives. The museum also documents the stages of development, the eras of Sultans, and the special events celebrated in the Maldives. The museum's collection showcases a myriad of artifacts that depict the lifestyles of Maldivians from various periods. Among these objects are items that reflect the culture, heritage, and artistic expressions of the people.
