Independent presidential candidate Umar Naseer has unveiled his vision for national development.
At a special campaign event, Umar provided details on his vision to transform the Maldives to a developed country by 2045. He said that due to its close proximity to China and India, the Maldives can take advantage of the rapid economic progress of both countries.
Additionally, Umar highlighted that the Maldives is located in a busy sea route, which sees the transport of two thirds of the global oil shipments. He said that 40 ships cross near Uligan, Haa Alifu Atoll, daily and therefore a transshipment port should be built in the country. He added that the Maldives would also see a major economic change with the development of free trade ports, especially in Addu City.
Furthermore, Umar highlighted the importance of canning all fish caught in the Maldives before exporting and said that the government should allow the privatisation of the fishing industry. He also emphasised the need to eradicate government corruption entirely as a crucial step toward transforming the Maldives into a developed nation.
