Ilyas Labeeb, the presidential candidate of The Democrats, has pledged to provide housing for 25,000 families during his term and completely solve the housing crisis in the Greater Male' Region. He made the pledge at a function held to inaugurate the Veshi Fahi Male' programme.
At the event, Ilyas detailed his vision to reduce congestion in Male' and solve the housing crisis by ensuring housing for every resident in the city. Under the programme, he plans to provide housing to 25,000 families within five years and provide a settlement allowance for residents moving out of Male'.
The Veshi Fahi Male' programme includes a project to construct 15-storey buildings after vacating five government-owned land plots in Male'. The 13 floors of the buildings will be reserved for two and three-bedroom apartments while the rest of the floors will be dedicated to a gym and retail outlets. The project is estimated to cost USD253 million.
The project also involves completing the construction of the buildings and handing the apartments over to the eligible families within 18 months after vacating the land plots. The programme further includes a plan to vacate 10 blocks to develop parks as well as commencing projects to develop roads and improve services in Male'.
