The main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has accused the Male' City Council of impeding the campaign efforts of MDP's presidential candidate within the city.
During a press conference, Mariya Ahmed Didi, spokesperson for MDP's candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, expressed that MDP had twice applied for permission from the city council to conduct a gathering in the city. However, both requests were denied by the council. She highlighted that the current administration has allowed rival parties to carry out campaigning activities in line with the Constitution even if the city council which has an opposition majority declined permission for an MDP campaign event. As such, she said that Housing Development Corporation Limited (HDC) granted permission for the People's National Congress (PNC) to unveil the manifesto in Hulhumale' Phase 2.
Furthermore, Mariya critiqued the policies of PNC's presidential candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. She accused Dr. Muizzu of replicating President Solih's promises and noted that even as the Mayor, he appears to be violating the Constitution.
