The Ministry of Higher Education has handed over the project site of the Velidhoo Junior College to the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company Limited (MTCC).
The project site was handed over to MTCC after a meeting between officials of the higher education ministry, the contractor, and members of the Velidhoo Island Council.
The higher education ministry contracted MTCC to develop the proposed junior college in Velidhoo, Noonu Atoll, on August 10. As such, MTCC has begun transporting the equipment required for the project to the site. The company is tasked with completing the project within nine months at a cost of USD772,000.
The Velidhoo Junior College is to be developed as a single-storey building in a 10,225sqft land plot. The junior college will have a smart classroom, an ICT laboratory, an area for administrative services, and a library. The college will also be equipped with multipurpose workshops for vocational programmes for various fields of study. The higher education ministry has announced that it aims to commence teaching activities at the college within a year.
The development of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centres across the country is part of the government’s plans to build the human resource capacity of various sectors and prepare more youth for the employment market. As such, the project to construct a junior college in Dhidhdhoo in Haa Alifu Atoll, and the construction of a TVET centre in Alifushi in Raa Atoll, has already been completed.
