Lowest crime rates in 5 years: MDP

Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has stated that the past five years have been the lowest crime rate in the country. Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has affirmed that the country has experienced its lowest crime rates over the past five years.

The remark was made by Mariya Ahmed Didi, the spokesperson for the party's candidate, during a press conference held at Salt Cafe' and Restaurant in Male' City.

Speaking at the press conference, Spokesperson Mariya said the crime rate has decreased by more than half in the last five years compared to the previous five years. She said that between 2013-2018, 5,587 cases of physical violence were reported. She, however, said that between 2019-2023, the number dropped significantly to 2,777 cases. At the same time, she said 26,146 cases of theft were reported between 2013-2018 and the number decreased to 18,748 between 2019-2023.

Speaking at the press conference, Spokesperson Mariya conveyed that the crime rate had undergone a reduction of over 50% in the past five years in contrast to the preceding five years. She noted that a total of 5,587 cases of physical violence were reported from 2013-2018. She, however, underscored that the figure saw a significant decline to 2,777 cases from 2019-2023. Simultaneously, she pointed out that incidents of theft numbered 26,146 cases between 2013-2018, with a subsequent decrease to 18,748 between 2019-2023.

Furthermore, Mariya highlighted that from a total of 41 individuals lost their lives due to various criminal activities from 2013-2018. She underscored that this number has seen a decrease in the most recent five-year period. Subsequently, she mentioned that the count of individuals killed in connection to different crimes amounted to seven between 2019-2023.

Furthermore, Mariya emphasised that substantial endeavors have been dedicated to law enforcement in order to curtail crime. She conveyed that a secure environment has been established to ensure the safety and well-being of the populace.
