The Coast Guard of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has seized a fishing vessel from Sri Lanka that had illegally entered the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of the Maldives.
The vessel, Dururaastha 10, was seized at a location approximately 15.2 nautical miles away from the shores of Filladhoo in Haa Alifu Atoll. MNDF reported that the vessel was carrying seven crew members and had been successfully towed to the harbour in Kulhudhuffushi in Haa Dhaalu Atoll. Subsequently, the Coast Guard is tasked with transporting the vessel to Male' City.
Many foreign fishing vessels have been seized by the Coast Guard while illegally fishing in the EEZ of the Maldives previously as well. Such vessels are released after a fine is paid.
