Umar pledges to execute those sentenced to death by Supreme Court

Independent presidential candidate Umar Naseer has pledged to execute all individuals who have been sentenced to death by the Supreme Court within three months of assuming office. He made the remark in a special programme aired by Dhivehi Raajjeyge Adu for presidential candidates.

Speaking on the programme, Umar said that his administration would prioritise establishing peace and security in the country. He also said that he will allow the execution of all individuals who have been sentenced to death by the Supreme Court, with the consent of the family of the victims.

Additionally, Umar vowed to solve immigration issues and said he will shut down illegally run foreign businesses within 30 days of his administration. He said that foreigners will be required register their business and pay a royalty. He also said that he will deport 100,000 foreign workers during the five years of his administration and will only allow in those needed for the labour market. He added that foreign workers who are brought into the country will only be allowed to work their assigned jobs, expressing concern that many businesses have been taken over by foreigners.

Furthermore, Umar pledged curtail state involvement in specific business domains, opting to privatise select state-owned enterprises (SOEs) to foster a thriving private sector. He highlighted that this would enable SOEs to concentrate on providing essential goods. Umar also revealed intentions to provide tax exemptions for micro businesses, along with proposals to establish a transshipment port in the southernmost region and a free trade port zone in the north.
