The Maldives ratifies CED at UN

The Maldives has ratified the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (CED) by depositing the instrument of ratification at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York.

The Convention, adopted by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 20, 2006, is one of the nine core international human rights treaties. CED came into effect on December 23, 2010, placing an obligation for states to prevent, prohibit and criminalise the offence of enforced disappearance as a grave human rights violation.

The Maldives has become party to eight core international human rights treaties, marking the commitment of the government to uphold human rights in both the domestic and international sphere, with this step forward.

The Maldives signed the CED on 6 February 2007. A total of 72 countries that have signed the Convention out of 98 countries.
