Former President Waheed leaves PPM

Former President Dr. Mohamed Waheed has left the Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM).

In a message on Twitter, Former President Waheed said he joined PPM 10 years ago to ensure national stability and the continuation of the development measures that he initiated. He said he was overjoyed to see the fruition of many of the plans, even though there is still more work to be done to advance Maldivian people and stabilize both the economy and democracy.

Former President Waheed also said he decided to resign as a special advisor and member of PPM as he feels that his skills, experience, and knowledge should be utilised in a place that has stability, integrity, and honesty to facilitate the success of all Maldivians.

Former President Waheed left PPM after expressing interest in becoming the party's presidential candidate in case former President Abdulla Yameen is unable to contest in the election. It was also reported that Waheed has cleared his criminal record. However, PPM has decided to support Mayor of Male' City Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, the candidate of opposition coalition partner People's National Congress (PNC).
