Waste-to-energy plant in Addu to be ready by September

Mayor of Addu City Ali Nizar has announced that the waste-to-energy plant is scheduled to be fully constructed and operational by September.

Speaking to PSM News on the challenges facing the Addu City Council, Mayor Ali Nizar said the waste problem has always been the biggest issue facing Addu and it will be solved by next year. Nizar addressed the challenges confronting the Addu City Council, emphasising that the issue of waste management has consistently posed significant challenges in Addu. He, however, expressed confidence that the issue will be effectively resolved by the following year. In addition, he highlighted that previous attempts to tackle the waste issue have lacked a sustainable approach. He also underscored the collaborative efforts between the council and the government to identify a lasting solution for the persistent waste problem in Addu.

The government stated that the waste-to-energy plant will burn 50 tonnes of waste per day and generate 1.5MW of electricity per hour in Addu. The facility will be connected to the central power grid of Addu.

The government decided to establish the first waste-to-energy plant in the Maldives as part of its commitment to sustainable waste management and pave the way for solving the waste management issues in the atolls.
