President submits candidacy form

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has submitted his candidacy form to contest in the upcoming presidential election.

President Solih's Election Agent Mohamed Nashiz and Campaign Manager Mohamed Rasheed Hussain handed over his candidacy form to the President of the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) Fuad Thaufeeq. ECM is required to announce a decision on whether to accept his candidacy within 48 hours and its decision can be appealed at the Supreme Court.

Furthermore, President Solih has also appointed Majority Leader of the Parliament Mohamed Aslam as his running mate. Aslam, the Leader of the Parliamentary Group (PG) of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is one of the most senior members of Parliament who is also a long-serving member of the main ruling party.

ECM will close the opportunity to submit forms on August 7 and will assign the ballot numbers of the candidates on August 9. The presidential election is scheduled to be held on September 9 and a possible second round will be held on September 30. The eligible voting population for the presidential election is 282,672 voters.
