President appoints Aslam as Running Mate

The presidential candidate of the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has chosen Parliamentarian Mohamed Aslam as his running mate for the upcoming presidential election.

Aslam is the leader of the MDP Parliamentary Group (PG), which holds a supermajority at the Parliament of the Maldives and is also one of the longest-serving members. He was part of the parliamentary assembly that drafted the new Constitution and has been a member of all parliamentary assemblies elected since then. He has also been working with MDP since its inception.

So far, MDP, the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM), the Maldives National Party (MNP), and the People's National Congress (PNC) have announced their candidates and running mates. Leader of Jumhooree Party (JP) Qasim Ibrahim has not announced his running mate for the presidential election.

The Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) will close the opportunity to submit forms on August 7 and will assign the ballot numbers of the candidates on August 9. The presidential election is scheduled to be held on September 9 and a possible second round will be held on September 30. The eligible voting population for the presidential election is 282,672 voters.
