MIFCO storage capacity to reach 14,000 tonnes

The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company Limited (MIFCO) has said its storage capacity will increase to 14,000 tonnes by the end of the year.

Speaking to PSM News, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ismail Fauzy said the biggest priority at the moment is to increase the storage capacity of MIFCO and that the government has launched major projects to strengthen the management of the company and provide modern facilities to fishermen. As such, he said a 120MT brine freezing facility is being built in Kooddoo Fisheries Complex and the Thinadhoo Fisheries Complex is also being developed. He also said the machinery required for these two locations has already been delivered.

Additionally, Fauzy revealed that a 4000MT cold storage facility is being built for the Felivaru Fisheries Complex. He said the development of these facilities will effectively address the fish shortage issue for fishermen. He mentioned that the expansion will bring the company's overall storage capacity to 14,000 tonnes by the end of the year. Furthermore, he said two more fish processing vessels have been acquired, with plans underway to procure three additional vessels to enhance the company's capabilities.
