MTCC mobilises Omadhoo harbour development project

The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has officially mobilised the Harbour Development Project in Omadhoo, Alifu Dhaalu Atoll.

The state-owned company is tasked with dredging 50,000cbm of the harbour and 12,000cbm of the channel, building a 398m breakwater, 208m revetment, and a 346m quay wall. The scope of works also includes the installation of 1,6470sqm harbour pavement, building a ramp and access platform, a concrete jetty, and installing navigation and street lights. The project is valued at USD4.3 million.

Speaking to PSM News, President of Omadhoo Island Council Ibrahim Adil said that harbour usage has increased compared to last year due to more local tourism and boat traffic for the import and export of goods. He said the residents are optimistic the harbour will become a convenient place for all kinds of vessels to dock. In addition, he said the government plans to work on a shore protection project while redeveloping the harbour.

Omadhoo is renowned for fishing and local tourism, attracting many visitors to its harbour on a daily basis. However, a major concern among the island's residents is that the current harbour, constructed in 1999, is in a state of disrepair, making it challenging to use. The dilapidated condition of the harbour has resulted in difficulties in docking boats during severe weather, leading to incidents like waves causing boats to sink. Moreover, the harbour is prone to flooding, making it problematic for larger boats to approach safely.
