Gov't prepares to install solar PV systems in mosques

Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology has revealed that it plans to begin the installation of solar PV systems in mosques in August.

Installing solar PV systems in 155 mosques across the country is an initiative of the environment ministry. The initiative also involves equipping the mosques with air conditioning systems and is expected to result in a 50% reduction in electricity bills.

The deadline for submission of bids from interested parties to supply the solar PV systems a National Competitive Bidding (NCB) policy is August 17. However, the environment ministry is preparing to begin work on some mosques in August using available equipment. The ministry stated that the solar PV systems will be maintained by the island councils.

Deputy Minister of Environment, Climate Change, and Technology Ali Majid said the administration has initiated a project to help local councils free up a large portion of the electricity bills for other purposes and achieve the government's target of net zero emissions by 2030. The ministry stated that the project is expected to save USD518,800 annually from the state budget.

The government has been actively pursuing various projects aimed at reducing energy consumption and promoting the use of environmentally friendly energy sources. The commitment to sustainable practices aligns with the administration's broader goals of promoting renewable energy and addressing climate change. By incorporating renewable energy systems in mosques, the government aims to set an example for the wider community and encourage the adoption of clean energy solutions.
