MTCC to begin Dhevvadhoo shore protection project

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has revealed that the shore protection project in Dhevvadhoo, Gaafu Alifu Atoll, will begin in August.

Speaking about the preparations for the project, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTCC Adam Azim said the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) required to start the project has been completed. He said the equipment needed to protect the shore will be delivered to the island by August and the entire project will be completed in about 4-5 months.

The scope of the project includes the construction of 120m rock boulder revetments in north, east and south of Dhevvadhoo, construction of 14 Y-shaped groynes, and designation of beach areas. The project is valued at USD1.4 million.

MTCC was awarded the contract in December last year to solve the erosion problem in the island. With a population of over 1,200 residents, Dhevvadhoo is grappling with the critical issue of erosion, which stands as the primary concern for its inhabitants.

President of Dhevvadhoo Island Council Abdulla Shafiu expressed concerns about the escalating issue of erosion in the island. He said that while erosion has been a longstanding problem, the past four years have witnessed a significant increase in erosion across various areas. He also said the most pressing concern is the high tides and the subsequent erosion that could lead to damage to houses.
