Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has completed the land reclamation and shore protection project in Ihavandhoo, Haa Alifu Atoll.
The reclamation project began in Ihavandhoo last year but was halted after the dredger was damaged and taken away for repairs after MTCC reclaimed eight hectares of land. The state-owned company brought in a new large dredger from Belgium to resume the project and avoid further delay. The project has now reached completion making remarkable progress in a short time. MTCC stated 54% shore protection completed and overall project progress at 75%.
Ihavandhoo has a population of 4,000 residents. The land reclamation project was allocated USD7.5 million from the state budget. The scope of the project included the reclamation of 25 hectares of land and the construction of an 850m rock boulder revetment, which will bolster shore protection.
