President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and First Lady Fazna Ahmed have attended the flag hoisting ceremony at Republic Square to mark the 58th anniversary of Maldives’ independence.
The ceremony commenced at 0600hrs and was attended by cabinet ministers, distinguished guests, and high-ranking officials from government offices and institutions. Upon arrival at the Republic Square, President Solih and First Lady Fazna were welcomed by the Minister of Defense Mariya Ahmed Didi and Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla. A special prayer was recited at the ceremony by Sheikh Azim Khalid.
Meanwhile, Vice President Faisal Naseem attended a flag ceremony held in Addu City. The ceremony took place at Addu City Square and was attended by Mayor of Addu City Ali Nizar, other members of the city council, and senior officials from government offices and institutions in the city.
Independence Day celebrations are held on July 26 each year to celebrate the Maldives gaining independence in 1965, following 77 years as a British protectorate.
