Defence Minister calls for solidarity to maintain independence

Minister of Defence Mariya Ahmed Didi has stated that allowing for differences of opinion, respecting each other and working together is essential to maintaining freedom and stability in the country. She made the remark in her message on the 58th Independence Day of Maldives.

In her message, Minister Mariya said that the administration has given top priority to the national security and the safety of citizens. She also said the administration attaches great importance to procuring and modernising the equipment needed for the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and providing the necessary resources and training to prepare for any threat to the country.

Additionally, Minister Mariya said that freedom relates to society and the people and not just to military force, as freedom of expression, justice, equal opportunities for citizens and increased prosperity are also important aspects of national independence. She added that allowing for differences of opinion, respecting each other and working together is essential to maintaining freedom and stability in the country.

Furthermore, Minister Mariya said that unity is needed to continue the journey of this country with peace and calm amidst the changing regional environment and strategic landscape. As such she highlighted the important role the MNDF plays in securing the territory of the country. She expressed gratitude for the courage shown by the military in facing challenging situations, placing responsibility and duty first, showing their heartfelt compassion and love for their countrymen. She concluded by calling on citizens to value their individual contributions for the future of the country.
