Maldives calls for immediate action to stop acts of religious hatred

The Maldives has urgently called on the international community to take strong measures to stop the recurrence of such acts of religious hatred against Islam. The government of the Maldives issued following the disrespectful act of burning the Holy Quran in front of the Embassy of Iraq in Denmark.

In the statement, the Maldives stated the recurrence of such despicable acts driven by hate and ignorance cannot be justified under the guise of freedom of expression. To allow such acts to take place will undermine the progress made by the international community over the years to prevent ethnic discrimination, division and hatred and will create fear in societies.

Additionally, the government stated that it is high time that the international community united unequivocally to condemn these appalling acts of religious hatred against Islam. The government also said that the international community must stand together against hatred, bigotry, and discrimination, and work towards building a world where every individual can coexist in peace, according to the statement.

Furthermore, the government urgently called upon the international community to address this issue collectively and take strong measures to stop the recurrence of such acts of religious hatred against Islam.

The act of desecration of the Holy Quran was also carried out in front of the Embassy of Iraq in Stockholm, Sweden,on July 21 during Eid al-Adha. These actions in were also permitted by the Swedish government.

The government has also issued separate statements condemning the attacks in other countries. In addition, the Organisation for Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has requested the Maldives to participate in the in an extraordinary open-ended meeting held by the United Nations (UN) over condemning acts of hatred against Islam.
