Former President Abdulla Yameen, the candidate of the opposition coalition, has signed his candidacy form.
Main opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) stated that former President Yameen has signed the relevant documents and delivered it to the party office through the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS). However, PPM has not disclosed when Yameen's candidacy form would be submitted to the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM).
The main opposition coalition has chosen former President Yameen as their candidate for the upcoming presidential election. However, due to his current 11-year prison sentence on charges of corruption and money laundering, he will only be eligible to run in the election if he wins the appeal case at the High Court.
To be eligible to contest in the presidential election, an individual should not have been convicted of a criminal offense with a sentence exceeding 12 months. If such a conviction occurred, at least three years must have passed since the completion of the sentence or the pardon. In addition, applicants should not have been convicted of offenses prescribed in Islam or offenses related to fraud or corruption.
