Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed has stated that utilising technological innovations is a fundamental responsibility of MPS to offer optimal services to the public. He made the remark while speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the Centre of Excellence for Public Safety, which showcases the advances made by the police in the field of technology to ensure community security and law enforcement.
The centre officially was opened on July 20, by Commissioner Hameed, Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla and Head of Cyber Security in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Dr. Mohamed Al Kuwaiti.
Commissioner Hameed said that their ultimate objective through these endeavors is to make the Maldives one of the safest and most secure nations in the world. He said that these aspirations can only be achieved by placing the welfare of the citizens at the forefront of their efforts. In addition, he said that an exponential part of the technical aspect of the centre was facilitated by UAE-based data analytics company powered by artificial intelligence (AI) Presight.
Meanwhile, Kuwaiti said that the centre comes as a great symbol based on the great relationship between the Maldives and UAE. He said that will not only serve as an enabler for safety and security, but it will also accelerate various social and economic aspects. He also said that the centre will be the seed to drive innovation and improve digital transformation across various sectors with the advanced cutting-edge technologies.
The centre is a showcase of technological advancements in the field of law enforcement and public safety in the Maldives. As the need for adapting to rapid advancements in technology and digitisation in providing an effective and efficient service to the nation became apparent, MPS initiated plans to advance its capabilities and capacity in those aspects. As such, the centre bears testament to the success in developing the competency of MPS in addressing this requirement and ensuring the well-being of citizens.
The platform incorporates AI and machine learning capabilities, to proactively identify the potential harm to society, thereby effectively ensuring public safety. It includes customised annotations to incorporate our language into machine learning aspects, the use of analytical tools to identify potential security risks, enhance investigative capabilities and tackle challenges presented by cyber threats to ensure the risks and threats to society is negated.
