Ministry of Foreign Affairs has appointed Ali Fauzy as the Honorary Consul of Russia to the Maldives.
Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid presented the exequatur to Fauzy at a special ceremony and expressed confidence that his appointment will contribute to strengthening economic, cultural and commercial ties between the Maldives and Russia. Fauzy is the Managing Director at Steel Hardware.
Maldivian citizens are often appointed as honorary consuls to represent countries that do not have resident ambassadors or have non-resident ambassadors. Their responsibilities include providing assistance to citizens of their representative country in the Maldives.
Over the years, government officials of the Maldives and Russia have held discussions to strengthen the bilateral relations of both countries. In addition, Russia is currently one of the top source markets for the tourism industry and the one millionth tourist welcomed to the Maldives this year was also a Russian citizen.
