Hoarafushi road development nears completion

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has revealed that the first phase of the road development project in Hoarafushi, Haa Alifu Atoll, will be completed in August.

MTCC was awarded the project in January last year and is currently developing the last road in Hoarafushi. Speaking to journalists after inspecting the progress of the project, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTCC Adam Azim said that the first phase of the road development project will be completed in August . He also said the second phase of the project will begin within the year.

Hoarafushi is one of the largest islands in the Maldives and has a population of over 2,000 residents. A large land area spanning over 74 hectares is inhabited. Hoarafushi Island Council stated that the roads in the island are in poor condition, which causes damages to vehicles.

As part of the project, 11 roads of Hoarafushi is being re-developed, including the six largest roads on the island. A total of 5.3km of roads is being developed with asphalt paving, speed breakers, street lights, signage, and a stormwater drainage system. The total value of the project is USD4.66 million.
