Online re-registration to be open for two weeks

Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) has revealed that voters in islands other than their resident islands will be provided with a two-week window to re-register online for the upcoming presidential election.

At a press conference, President of ECM Fuad Thaufeeq said that the opportunity to re-register will be open from July 16 to August 5, which is a three-week window. He, however, said that the opportunity for online re-registration will close on July 29, after which, voters will have to submit physical forms until August 5.

During the press conference, ECM provided a live demonstration of the online re-registration portal, showcasing its functionality and user interface. Secretary General Hassan Zakariya said that the electoral body is committed to ensuring that voters are well-informed about the process of using the portal by increasing public awareness through social media platforms.

ECM introduced the online re-registration to enhance convenience and accessibility and facilitate an easier registration process for the general public. The electoral body also stated that individuals who re-registered to vote in the 2020 local council elections will not need to go through the re-registration process again for the upcoming presidential elections.

The presidential election is scheduled to be held on September 9 and a possible second round will be held on September 30. The eligible voting population for the presidential election is 282,672 voters and ECM has established its main headquarters for the election at Dharubaaruge' convention centre.
