MTCC to build fish processing facilities in Thinadhoo, Kooddoo

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has been contracted to develop a new fish processing plant in Thinadhoo, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, and build an additional facility in Kooddoo Fisheries Complex.

The contract was signed by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTCC Adam Azim and CEO of Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) Ismail Fauzee. Under the contract, MTCC is tasked with developing the Thinadhoo Fisheries Complex and expanding the capacity of Kooddoo Fisheries Complex by building a 120MT brine freezing facility, container yard, and unloading platform. MIFCO has allocated USD2.9 million for the projects and is currently procuring the machinery and resources.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, CEO of MIFCO Fauzee said the machinery required for the Thinadhoo Fisheries Complex project will be brought in within 25 days and that MTCC will carry out the foundation works before the materials are brought in. He expressed confidence that the project will solve the challenges faced by fishermen in Gaafu Alifu Atoll and Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll, noting that it is the largest fishing region in the Maldives.

Additionally, Fauzee said that the construction of the fish processing plant in Fuvahmulah City will be completed within two months and the machinery and generator required for the facility are being brought in. He also said that a 50MT brine freezing facility is being added to the Addu Fisheries Complex and MIFCO is in the process of procuring more fish processing vessels.

Also at the ceremony, CEO Azim said MTCC is carrying out several projects to develop the fisheries sector and assured that the projects will be completed within the specified time frame.
