MTCC mobilises site for Bodufolhudhoo land reclamation project

Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has mobilised the land reclamation and shore protection project site in Bodufolhudhoo, Alifu Alifu Atoll.

MTCC stated that the reclamation of land in the island will start in August. The equipment needed for the project has been delivered to the site on July 8.

Under the scope of the project, MTCC is required to conduct reclamation operations of eight hectares of land. The state-owned company is also tasked with the construction of a 180m breakwater, 1,052m revetment and a 110m groyne. It is also tasked with completing the project within a year at a cost of USD4.8 million.

Bodufolhudhoo has a population of 700 residents. The unavailability of land for housing is one of the biggest issues facing the island since the 1990s. In addition to the housing problem, the island council noted that the land shortage is a major obstacle for the development of local tourism.
