Almost half of population do not live on their residential island

The results of the Maldives Census 2022 show that 46% of the population do not live on their residential island.

According to the recently released census results, the total population of the Maldives stands at 515,132 individuals, with 382,639 being Maldivian citizens. The majority of the population resides in the Greater Male' Region, comprising 211,908 people, which accounts for approximately 41% of the total population. This concentration can be attributed to the availability of essential services centralised in the capital city of Male'.

Additionally, the census reveals that around 46% of the population do not live on their residential islands and have relocated for various reasons, 40% of this group are between 25-39 years. Approximately 20% have moved for educational purposes, 19% for employment opportunities, and another 19% have relocated with their families. Furthermore, 37% of Maldivians have moved to Male' specifically for education, while 21% have migrated to live with their families, and 14% have come in search of employment.

Moreover, the census results indicate that 29% of Maldivians who had previously moved to Male' have returned to their residential islands due to their desire to live there. An additional 21% have returned with their families, and 13% have returned for marriage-related reasons. Notably, 10% of the population is employed in resorts, while 3% reside in industrial zones. Among the overall population, there are 132,493 foreigners living in the Maldives.

Vice President Faisal Naseem released the Census 2022 results at a function held to mark World Population Day. Speaking at the function, he highlighted the importance of collecting census data for understanding the needs and priorities of different regions and communities, facilitating evidence-based decision-making and resource allocation.
