Parliament approves re-formation of committees

The Parliament of the Maldives has passed a report on the re-formation of committees, allowing the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to maintain majority representation. This decision was made following changes to the register after the resignation of 12 members from the MDP. Subsequently, more parliamentarians switched party affiliations, resulting in a deadlock in the Parliament as political parties failed to reach an agreement on the new committee structure.

During an extraordinary sitting, the Parliament discussed the report on the re-formation of committees. Members from the opposition coalition, consisting of the Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) and the People's National Congress (PNC), as well as the newly formed The Democrats, proposed 10 amendments to the report in an attempt to prevent the MDP from obtaining majority representation. However, the Parliament approved the report without the amendments, with 35 votes in favor and 14 against, allowing the MDP to maintain majority representation in the standing committees.

The Committee on National Security Services and 16 other standing committees consist of a total of 183 slots. The MDP, with its 54 members, will receive 113 slots, while the 18 independent members will receive 35 slots. The five members from the minority party PPM will receive 11 slots. Additionally, the PNC and the Maldives National Party (MNP), both with three members, will receive five slots each, while the Jumhooree Party (JP) and the Maldives Development Alliance (MDA), each with two members, will receive five slots each.
