Freedom comes with responsibility: Chief Justice

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Ahmed Muthasim Adnan has emphasised that along with the rights guaranteed by the Constitution, comes a responsibility and duty for individuals. He made this remark during the inauguration ceremony of the new Magistrate Court building in Baarah, Haa Alifu Atoll.

Addressing the attendees, Chief Justice Adnan stressed the need for the justice system to keep pace with the rapid development occurring worldwide. He also urged judges to practice empathy in their work, highlighting the importance of recognizing that rights and freedoms are accompanied by responsibilities.

The project to construct the new magistrate court building in Baarah was initiated by the Baarah Island Council in 2021. The previous two-room building had posed challenges in conducting trials, administrative tasks, and other court-related matters.

The new building has been designed to provide adequate space and facilities for conducting court trials. It includes two courtrooms, separate sections for magistrates and staff, a dedicated waiting room for lawyers, a police post, conference room, archive room, reception area, and a waiting area to facilitate public services.

Chief Justice Adnan inaugurated the new Baarah Magistrate Court building as part of his visit to Haa Alifu Atoll. During the trip, he is engaging in discussions with magistrates and court employees to address the challenges they face in their work. Accompanying him on the trip are senior officials from the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) and the Department of Judicial Administration (DJA).
