Parliamentarian Jabir joins MDP

Parliamentarian Abdulla Jabir has joined the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).

Parliamentarian Jabir presented his membership application to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih during a special ceremony. President Solih expressed his enthusiasm for Jabir joining the main ruling party and emphasised that he will be actively engaged in campaigning for the upcoming presidential election. The president highlighted Jabir’s experience in Parliament and expressed confidence that he will be able to gain significant support for the party.

During the ceremony, Jabir said that his decision to join MDP was driven by his commitment to support President Solih's re-election bid. He expressed his dedication to actively participate in President Solih's campaign, firmly believing in the president's victory in the upcoming election.

Earlier this year, Jabir resigned as leader of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) after the Elections Commission of the Maldives (ECM) decided to dissolve the party, citing its failure to meet the legal requirement of having at least 3,000 members to continue to be registered as a political party. The electoral body also granted Jabir permission to form a new party, although he did not proceed with the submission of membership applications to register the party.
