Parliament goes to recess despite motion to continue session

The Parliament has gone to recess despite the motion submitted by Majority Leader Mohamed Aslam to continue the session to complete all pending works.

The agenda for the last sitting included the debate on the re-formation of the standing committees, but a decision would be made at another sitting. Parliamentary Group (PG) Leader of the main ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Aslam expressed concern over the Parliament going to recess before taking a vote on the matter. He noted that the Parliament made decisions on important matters during recess on previous occasions, and other MDP members voiced concern over the Parliament going to recess before re-forming the committees.

The Parliament did not make a decision on the motion to resume the session to deliberate on important matters. However, the parliamentary regulations allow parliamentarians to hold extraordinary sittings during recess.

The Parliament decided to re-form the committees after changes were made to the register following the resignation of 12 members from MDP. The Parliament has since been in a deadlock with important matters stalled, including crucial no-confidence motions that require the General Purpose Committee to assign time for the debates.
