President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has announced the administration’s plans to increase the operational capability of the military. He made the remark at the ceremony to mark the 131st anniversary of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).
Speaking at the ceremony, President Solih highlighted the developments and achievements made by the MNDF over the past years. He noted that the armed forces now have servicemen and servicewomen who are highly educated and capable and who have received military training and skills. He also mentioned the role of the armed forces in protecting the country and nation from land, air, and sea threats.
Additionally, President Solih noted the administration's efforts over the past four years to advance and develop the armed forces, citing numerous accomplishments, including the unprecedented enhancement of capabilities. He said that the government is acquiring advanced weapon-firing simulators and anti-drone systems and is planning to develop the Coastguard and Fire and Rescue Services. He said that expanding the Coastguard service is related to the needs of the general public as fishing vessels get bigger and more fishermen spend more time at sea. He further said that modern Fire and Rescue Services are needed due to the growing population, especially in the Greater Male’ Region.
Furthermore, President Solih said that the administration has decided to procure an unmanned aerial vehicle to further strengthen the Coastguard service in the newly expanded southern region. He highlighted the various crimes being committed in the country’s ocean territory such as drug smuggling and illegal fishing and highlighted the need to strengthen the role of the Coastguard to stop trespassing vessels. He noted that the Coastguard has captured 64 foreign fishing vessels since 2019.
At the ceremony, President Solih also said that the biggest threat facing the Maldives is extremism and terrorism. He urged MNDF officers to refrain from any action that might create division in the country, even if the threat comes from outside. He also said that the only way to ensure the continued independence and sovereignty of the Maldives is to safeguard and promote regional and international security. He added that this can only be achieved through close cooperation with other countries and international partners.
