Maldives committed to working on UN goals

The Maldives has reaffirmed its commitment to the United Nations (UN) and its Charter, and its commitment to working on priorities such as climate change, environmental sustainability, gender equality, and youth empowerment. The statement was made by Minister of Foreign Affairs Abdulla Shahid during a meeting with the Secretary-General of the UN Antonio Guterres in New York, United States (US).

Speaking at the meeting, Minister Shahid thanked Secretary-General Guterres for including the Maldives as one of the 30 pilot countries for the Early Warnings for All Initiative. He also commended Secretary-General Guterres on his decision to convene a Climate Ambition Summit during the High-Level Week of the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), noting the work that needs to be done ahead of COP28 to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Furthermore, Minister Shahid heard a briefing from Secretary-General Guterres on the ongoing issues of concern at the UN.
