MDP PG proposes to resume parliamentary session

The Parliamentary Group (PG) of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has proposed to continue the second session of the Parliament until important matters related to the concerns of the people are completed.

The work of the Parliament have come to a standstill as the standing committees have yet to be re-formed after 12 parliamentarians representing Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) resigned from the party. In addition, no-confidence motions have been submitted against the attorney general, foreign minister, speaker, and deputy speaker. The notices for all the no-confidence motions except of the speaker have expired.

According to the parliamentary regulations, the last sitting of the current session will be held on June 19 and the third session will begin on July 17 after the Parliament returns from recess. At the last sitting, Parliamentarian Ibrahim Shareef submitted the motion to extend the session, which was endorsed by Parliamentarian Mohamed Shifau.

At the sitting, Parliamentarian Shareef said that the Parliament should not go to recess without deliberating on important matters that are related to the concerns of the people. He noted the various pending motions and bills and committee works as well as the appointment of state officials. He also highlighted the importance of voting on the no-confidence motions against Speaker Mohamed Nasheed and Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla.

Pro-government parliamentarians supported the motion to continue the session and said it was irresponsible of the Secretariat of the Parliament to avoid deliberating on the no-confidence motions against the speaker and deputy speaker. Meanwhile, opposition parliamentarians claimed that the issue was created by members of the ruling party for the benefit of the government.
