Gov't raises disability allowance to USD195

The government of the Maldives has made the decision to raise the disability allowance to USD195.

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, after considering a proposal presented by the Ministry of Gender, Family, and Social Services, approved the revision of the disability allowance and the introduction of additional allowances based on the recommendations of the cabinet which marks the first revision of the allowance framework since its inception 12 years ago. Previously, individuals with disabilities received a monthly allowance of USD129.

The move to increase the disability allowance recognizes the importance of supporting and providing for individuals with special needs in the country. Currently, there are over 36,000 people with disabilities in the Maldives. When the disability allowance was initially introduced, 3,560 individuals were beneficiaries. However, this number has grown, and as of now, a total of 11,371 beneficiaries have received a combined amount of USD7.1 million in disability allowance this year.

The government aims to better meet the financial needs of individuals with disabilities and enhance their overall well-being. The decision reflects the government's commitment to promoting inclusivity, supporting vulnerable populations, and addressing the evolving requirements of persons with special needs in the Maldives.
