The Parliamentary Group (PG) of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has issued a press release calling on the Secretariat of the Parliament and its members to facilitate sittings and resume parliamentary work.
The MDP PG emphasized the need to prioritize the debate and decision on the no-confidence motion against Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla in accordance with parliamentary regulations. It further clarified that the standing committees should continue their work with the current members until any changes are approved by the Parliament.
The MDP PG expressed its full cooperation in holding the sitting on June 14 to re-form the committees and address other important matters on the agenda. It stressed the significance of resolving the issues related to the stalled committees in order to overcome conflicts within the Parliament. The decision to address these matters was made following three separate meetings between the MDP PG and various political parties and independent members.
However, the MDP PG expressed concern over the disruption of the sitting by opposition members and criticized the speaker for adjourning the session without adhering to parliamentary regulations. This interruption has caused a delay in parliamentary proceedings at a time when important matters are awaiting discussion.
The agenda for the June 14 sitting included crucial topics such as the proposed solution for committee re-formation, a bill to enable visually impaired individuals to cast ballots independently, and amendment bills to the Presidential Election Act, the Judges' Act, and the Legal Professions Act. Additionally, the resolution addressing the rise in infertility cases and the provision of treatment through the national insurance scheme was also slated for discussion.
